Integrated fridge?
Where to put the fridge magnets now

By Amanda, Beyond the Fridge

New kitchens are tidy. The fridge hides behind a cupboard door that matches everything else, and the room looks calm and finished.

Then the first school letter comes home, and there’s nowhere to put it.

The problem with a fridge behind a cupboard door

For years the fridge door did a quiet job. It held the holiday magnets, the dentist’s appointment card, the child’s drawing and the shopping list. A fitted fridge takes that away. Magnets don’t stick to a wooden door, so they end up in a drawer, and the paperwork ends up in a pile.

That gap is where our name comes from. We’ve been making steel boards since 2007, and the first ones were for exactly this: a home for the magnets once the fridge has disappeared.

One customer put it better than we could:

Beyond the Fridge offers the best background for magnet display ever! Especially for those of us with integrated appliances.

Where a board works in a fitted kitchen

Beside the fridge. The wall next to a run of tall units is often plain and just the right height. A board there sits where the fridge door used to be, so everyone already knows where to look.

On the end of a cabinet run. The end panel of a row of tall cabinets is a flat, upright surface that usually does nothing. A board fits it neatly.

“Was very easy to install on the side of the cabinet and is a great looking quality piece.”
A W.

On the dining room wall. If the kitchen opens onto a dining area, the wall by the table works well, especially for photos and postcards you want to look at over dinner. Our World Map board is popular here: the holiday magnets go on the countries they came from.

Not by the cooker. Keep it away from the hob. A board full of paper notes and postcards isn’t something to have next to a cooker.

Which size fits the space

Every board comes in three sizes, landscape or portrait:

Landscape
Portrait
Small55 × 40 cm for a narrow end panel or the space beside a door
Landscape
Portrait
Medium75 × 55 cm room for the week’s letters and a good spread of magnets
Landscape
Portrait
Large100 × 75 cm for a family wall or a big collection of magnets
Line drawings to scale against each other, with the rounded corners and four pre-drilled fixing holes.

If you’re unsure, mark the size on the wall with masking tape and live with it for a day.

Plain colours that go with a fitted kitchen

Most fitted kitchens suit a plain colour. There are six: white, grey, blue, green, yellow and pink. White and grey blend in with the units. Yellow, blue, green and pink give the corner a bit of colour, so it reads as something you meant to put there.

Will my magnets stick?

Yes. The boards are 1.2 mm steel, so ordinary fridge magnets work.

“When we changed the kitchen we got a fitted fridge so nowhere for my magnets. Bought 4 of these boards to put all of our magnets on. They’re perfect.”
Melanie N.

Some glass magnetic boards need stronger magnets. If the collection needs topping up, we make about 30 designs of fridge magnet, plus plain 25 mm magnets in packs of ten.

Putting it up

Each board comes pre-drilled with the fixings included. It screws flush to the wall, so it looks fitted rather than hung.

“Also the perfect size, sits flush against the wall and seems to work with normal magnets.”
Anne-Marie D.

The boards are made for indoor use.

How it’s made and how long it takes

Every board is made after you order it, here in Britain. It’s 1.2 mm steel with a high-gloss, scratch-resistant enamel finish, so it’s magnetic and you can write on it with a dry-wipe pen and wipe it clean. It’s delivered in 3 to 5 working days.

Your magnets have somewhere to go again.
