Benjamin Baugh patented the enamel sign in Britain in 1859 and opened the first factory for them at Selly Oak in 1889. By 1900 every shopping street in the country carried them. By the 1970s virtually all had been scrapped.
Sheet steel, a gloss vitreous finish and a name set large in a plain sans serif. That is the object this board descends from.
